Description
Motor control includes more than just the starting and stoping actions. To be useful in industrial processes, motors must also operate on command, function at varying speeds, start under different conditions, run backwards, or stop at any given instant. Elevator motors must "soft start" to avoid throwing the passengers to the floor on acceleration; tank-filled pump motors must know when a tank is full to avoid overflow. Motors must also be protected from the harsh conditions that are a normal part of industrial operations. After all, replacing a fuse or resetting a circuit breaker makes considerably more economic sense than replacing a motor that costs several thousand dollars after it has been damaged by a current surge. In this lesson you will learn about the devices that control and protect motors, and how these devices are used in the real world.
