Description
Artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging digital technologies are rapidly transforming the water and wastewater industry by providing new tools to improve operational efficiency, asset management, regulatory compliance, maintenance, and decision-making. While many utilities recognize the potential benefits of these technologies, many organizations lack a practical framework for evaluating, planning, and implementing AI solutions. This course is designed to provide water and wastewater professionals with the knowledge and practical guidance needed to assess organizational readiness, identify appropriate applications, understand implementation requirements, and develop a structured roadmap for the successful adoption of AI technologies across utility operations.
Course Level
Intermediate thru Advanced
Course Content
This course provides a practical overview of artificial intelligence implementation in water and wastewater utilities. Topics include AI readiness assessment, organizational planning, data management, governance, cybersecurity considerations, and implementation strategies using a structured Crawl–Walk–Run–Fly framework. Participants will explore practical applications of AI and emerging digital technologies across water treatment, wastewater treatment, distribution systems, collection systems, asset management, maintenance, regulatory compliance, and utility operations. The course also examines methods for evaluating AI technologies, selecting pilot projects, managing organizational change, and developing long-term implementation strategies that support safe, effective, and sustainable utility operations.
Target Audience
This course is intended for licensed water and wastewater operators, supervisors, managers, engineers, maintenance personnel, utility directors, environmental professionals, and other individuals responsible for the operation, maintenance, management, planning, or regulatory compliance of water and wastewater treatment, distribution, and collection systems.
