Description
Protective Relaying, Part 1: Quick isolation of faulty parts of a power system is essential to proper operation of the system. Protection against faults requires circuit breakers which open manually or automatically. An automatic protection system employs relays to open the breakers when a fault occurs. Primary and backup protection are obtained by proper selection and setup of various types of relays. A pneumatic circuit breaker described in this section serves as an illustration of the breaker function in protection systems. The breaker is controlled by relays and switches which require several control circuits each of which has an essential role. This study unit will cover the principles and components of protective relays and will also cover relay testing. Protective Relaying, Part 2: Relays of many types are combined to provide adequate protective relaying of electrical apparatus and lines. Generators are protected against loss of excitation by impedance relays, against unbalanced fault currents by time overcurrent relays, and against overheating of stator and bearings by temperature detecting devices. An overall differentail relay protects the who generator transformer unit. Connection diagrams for all these protective relays are given in this lesson and the operation of relays is explained.
