To acquire skill with this versatile welding process, you will need to first understand the fundamental nature of gas metal arc welding. With this study unit you can learn the basics of the GMAW process, taking your first step to becoming proficient in the use of GMAW equipment. You will then be able to apply what you have learned in a variety of jobs under a variety of job conditions. In the modern industrial setting, with all our rapidly changing technologies, knowledge of the fundamentals is especially important. A solid understanding of the basics in gas metal arc welding will let you readily adapt to the inevitable future changes in this welding process. One of the most important basic facts you will learn about GMAW is that the process consists of many interdependent factors, or variables. A change is one factor will generally affect one or more related factors. If you can keep that concept in mind throughout your studies, you will finish with a more thorough appreciation and understanding of this important welding process.
