Description
With preventive or preventative maintenance programs, the tasks move away from "fire fighting" toward preventing downtime maintenance. The maintenance department can convert the shop's and operator's time into inspection and downtime maintenance repair tasks. However, there is always a problem with a basic preventive maintenance program. This problem is scheduling. For this reason, predictive maintenance (PDM) technologies were developed. Predictive technologies measure one or more characteristics of machine operation, calculate the expected life of the monitored system, and then estimate the condition of equipment and the need for maintenance on that equipment. With this information passed along to a good preventive maintenance program, the preventive maintenance team can make informed decisions on task scheduling and make the most of its maintenance and inspection tasks. PDM allows maintenance departments to predict when a unit will fail and plan its maintenance during a scheduled downtime, usually when the unit is cooler, cleaner, and not needed for the manufacturing process.
