Description
Each of the separate welding processes will be described in this study unit. Welds produced by the different processes vary in appearance and to some extent, in the depth of fusion. All welds however are characterized by the union of parts into a single piece.
To be able to weld successfully you need to be aware of a number of other factors. These factors can be combined into four groups: design, materials, production, and inspection. Because it is a welder's job to produce the weld, there is no question that the factor of production is important. To weld properly the welder must know what metals are to be welded and what design is to be used. A knowledge of welded joints is essential to understanding welding. Here you will learn the fundamental types of joints used in welding, their basic dimensions, and their proportions. You will also learn to recognize the important characteristics of the various joint designs and the types of welds used in them.
