Description
This 3-hour review with handouts will cover bacteria, protozoa, parasites, viruses and toxins that can cause disease from water ingestion and water contact. Drinking water treatment has a goal to prevent the ingestion of disease organisms. Wastewater treatment has a goal to minimize the release of disease microorganisms to the environment to protect those who come in contact with receiving waters downstream. The roots of sanitary engineering world-wide reside in the disruption of the cycling of these disease organisms. It's good to remind ourselves why we do what we do today, and to appreciate that others around the world are less fortunate.
