Description
The purpose of the OSHA bloodborne pathogen* regulation is to limit occupational exposure to blood and other related potentially infectious biological fluids and exposed materials. Exposure to such fluids or materials could result in transmission of pathogens (viruses and bacteria), which can lead to disease or death. Such potentially infectious pathogens include: Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) and Hepatitis C Virus (HCV): These are the causative agents of viral hepatitis, a serious liver disease. Hepatitis B has a preventative vaccine that workers can use to protect themselves from the virus. Hepatitis C is currently incurable. Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV): the causative agent of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome or AIDS. HIV infection is currently incurable.
