Activated sludge is a complicated process. This course is the first of a series of discussions about the activated sludge process. The course is broken into three sections of course material, as illustrated below:

Section 1: Introduction and overiew of activated sludge, the early years, and a most unusual pollution solution * Section 2: Development of activated sludge treatment technology, how activated sludge treatment works, and activated sludge process variations * Section 3: Activated sludge treatment plant microbiology, looking into the aeration tank, indicator microorganisms, and flocculation.
