Description
The purpose of this course is to expose wastewater treatment facility operators to the skills needed to effectively troubleshoot and optimize the activated sludge treatment process. Many operators have had little formal training in microbiology and chemistry. However, operators have a high interest in these subjects if the training is kept relevant to what they do. This course includes a relatively in-depth presentation of the microbiology and chemistry that occurs in the activated sludge process. The greatest interest of operators is troubleshooting and optimizing their systems. Many have been operating a system on the "this is how we have always done it" basis. Practical and direct strategies for operation and troubleshooting is what they want, not design calculations. This course addresses both the fundemental microbiologyand chemistry of the activated sludge process, and the practical aspects of operating, optimizing, and troubleshooting. The concept of optimization, as used in this training course, is limited to making improvements in the operation of various unit processes. Optimizing a wastewater treatment system is a broader concept and is beyond the scope of this course.
