Description
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has established
Standard 29 CFR 19 10.157 to cover the placement, use, maintenance and testing
of portable fire extinguishers. OSHA requires the following:
Employers must provide approved portable fire extinguishers and make
them readily accessible to employees.
Fire extinguishers must be inspected, maintained and tested.
Fire extinguishers must be appropriate for the classes of anticipated
workplace fires and the sizes and degrees of hazards that would affect their
use.
Employees must be trained in the use of fire extinguishers and the hazards
of incipient-stage firefighting.
