Description
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has established
General Industry Respiratory Protection Standard 29 CFR 1 9 1 0.1 3 4.
The OSHA standard states that your first goal in developing respiratory protection
measures should be to prevent atmospheric contamination. In other words, you
should try to keep the air in you workplace as clean as you can. OSHA requires
that this should be accomplished, as much as possible, through the use of accepted
engineering controls: for example, enclosing or confining the operation, providing
general and local ventilation, substituting less toxic materials and so on.
When engineering controls are not feasible or sufficient or while they are being
put into place, the OSHA standard requires the use of appropriate respirators.
When it becomes necessary to protect the health of employees, employers must
provide respirators that are applicable and suitable for the purpose intended. This
means that respirators must be selected based on the specific hazard or hazards
that are present, as well as the work that is to be performed.
In addition, OSHA requires that a respiratory protection written program be
established and maintained. The written program will form the basis of your
respiratory protection efforts and should state clearly what the hazards are, how
they will be controlled and how respiratory protection equipment will be selected,
used and maintained.
