Description
The American Water - Best Operating Practices Group developed the Valve Operation, Inspection and Maintenance Practice to insure that all Operating Groups within American Water perform the inspection and maintenance of all valves consistently and in accordance with American Water Works Association (AWWA) Standards.This course is based on the proper inspection and exercising of distribution system line valves. The course is divided into two parts; classroom and field. If a valve number system and valve data system has not been established this is a good opportunity to initiate that process. The course starts with a classroom discussion that is critical. This discussion if followed by field exercising where line valves are located and exercised.

What is the Purpose of a Valve Program: Develop a new comprehensive valve program, Validate data of the asset, Extend the assets life, Improve reliability and access, Minimize service interruptions and Minimize maintenance costs. Why is it Important to have an effective valve program: Lessons customer impact in normal/emergencies activity, Improves Water Quality, Regulatory requirements, Community expectatations, Improved customer service, Efficient use of resources and Asset Planning. Who are the owners of a Valve Program: Local Manager, Front Line Supervisor and Employee. Activity Description: * 70% Required During this activity each crew will be required to locate and exercise at least two line valves. In order to pass this skill activity the crew must peform at 100%.
