Description
Coliform bacteria have been used as water quality indicators as far back as the 1920’s. Fecal coliform bacteria are the subgroup of the total coliforms present in the guts and feces of warm-blooded animals. Wastewater laboratory analysts are routinely required to test samples for fecal coliform bacteria. This course presents detailed information about analyzing samples for fecal coliform bacteria using the membrane filter procedure. It covers general information about coliform bacteria, method selection, sampling, documentation, equipment, apparatus, personal protective equipment, chemicals, and a general overview of the procedure. A detailed, step-by-step Standard Operating Procedure is presented with information on rules, calculations, quality control, and troubleshooting. The course concludes with a look at the files of the fictitious Ernieville Water and Sewer Authority and some very real problems its analysts faced when analyzing samples for fecal coliform bacteria.
