Description
Preliminary treatment (or pretreatment) processes are not always given the respect or attention they deserve. These processes remove the most pounds of contaminants, protect downstream equipment, help optimize downstream treatment processes, control odors, improve disinfection, and provide data for important regulatory report calculations. These preliminary processes have significant safety issues and mathematical concepts. Coarse and fine screening, barminution and comminution, grit removal, flow measurement and flow equalization and pre-chlorination for odor control. The 'bottom line' is that the proper design, operation and maintenance of these pretreatment processes have significant impacts on the overall safety, permit compliance and cost management of wastewater treatment facilities. For each process its purpose, normal operation, likely upsets, consequences and corrective actions are covered as well as regulatory implications and the mathematical concepts involved. Participants are encouraged to describe their own experiences with these processes, including examples of successful troubleshooting and corrective actions.
