Description
In section one, you will learn the various monitoring and analyzing instruments used in a water/wastewater lab. A general discussion will provide the student with a better understanding of each lab component and how to protect each one. Some good tips of safety and preventive maintenance will be highlighted, along with guidelines to develop your Lab Safety Program. In section two, the discussion of labware and protection of these fragile containers. The student will gain a better understanding of disposal techniques and cautions in dealing with biohazardous materials. Some great checklist items on disposal techniques in developing your safety program. And lastly in section three, a description of emergency preparedness with actual case studies from Hurricane Katrina related to water/wastewater facility damage. What to plan for? How to develop an emergency preparedness plan for treatment plant, records, and lab. Some actual examples from facilities in Mississippi will be highlighted.

* Temperature and pressure should never be exceeded when using an autoclave. * The federal government requires state and local governments to follow Incident Command System during disasters. In the day to day operation of a laboratory the safe use of equipment, the proper disposal of wastes and having a plan prepared for a natural, technical or man made disaster will possibly save yourself or a fellow worker's life. * Ultraviolet rays can cause burns and damage skin and eye tissue,how you handle glassware is important. * Two important factors in disposing of laboratory waste are making sure your disposal method is both safe and legal and emergency power and communication is optional and not manadatory in regards to EOS. * How to remove rubber tubing from a glass stopper; how to properly dispose of biohazards at a lab; and that a pandemic is considered a natural emergency * Reasons NOT to use metal containers for waste.
