Description
In the past many water suppliers and regulatory agencies have ignored cross-connection control. Today 32 states require that public water suppliers develop and enforce comprehensive cross-connection control programs. From 1981 to 1998, CDC documented 57 waterborne disease outbreaks related to cross-connection, resulting in 9,734 illnesses. Craun and Calderon (2001) reported that 30.3 percent of waterborne disease outbreaks in community water systems during 1978-1998 were caused by contamination of water in the distribution systems. Of these waterborne disease outbreaks casued by distribution system dificiencies, 50.6 percent were due to cross-connection and backflow (Craun and Calderon, 2001). The EPA states that cross-connection control survey work should only be performed by certified personnel knowledgeable about the commercial and industrial potential cross-connection as well as general industrial uses for both the potable and process water. This course is designed to certify personnel to do an acurate cross-connection, backflow survey.
