Description
This workshop is designed to teach proper analytical techniques associated with assessing the microbial activity in general water quality measurements, including drinking water and wastewater. Tests covered include presence/absence, paddle testers, Biological Activity Reaction Tests, membrane filtration, most probable number (multiple tube fermentation), and pour plate methods. Testing theory will be presented, which will incorporate practicle application on analytical procedures. Hands-on experience with each test will also be provided. Attendees will practice techniques in the analysis of potable and nonpotable water samples.
Course Level
Basic thru Advanced
Course Content
*History and Fundamantals - Presentation that traces the history of microbiology and introduces the fundamental principles of culture media testing.
* Presentation about rapid test techniques (P/A, paddle testers, BARTs), laboratory excercises running rapid tests on water samples.
* Includes discussion about sampling, presentationon principles of membrane filtration, lab exercises include running membrane filtration in potable and nonpotable water samples using a variety of media.
* Presentation on principles of MPN testing, laboratory exercises includes running MPN dilutions on a nonpotable water sample.
* Presentation about pour plate methods, laboratory includes preparation of media and running HPC on a nonpotable water sample.
* Presentation covering 5 crucial steps to microbiological analysis, review on media used the previous day.
* Enumeration of P/A and paddle tests, discussion of results, practice confirmation techniques.{NEWL
Target Audience
Members of the target audience include water and wastewater operators, lab analysts and managers, quality control supervisors, regulatory personell, and environmental protection staff - Anyone whoe needs to perform or utilize data from microbiological analyses.
