Description
When it comes to operator mathematics, operators often take improper short cuts or end up guessing/ estimating mathematical parameters that are critical for the optimization of technical processes. This class teaches the fundamentals of operator math while stressing the need for "quantifying" processes with the ultimte goal of process optimization. This goal is unattainable without operators skilled in operator math calculations.
Course Level
Basic thru Advanced
Course Content
* Sources of Operator Math Confusion: Basic algebraic functions, accounting for Units of Measure, using Units of Measure from both the English system and Metric system, abbreviations , etc
* Eliminating Numerical Confusion: how the same mathematical expression can be represented in different ways; when to multiply, when to divide; fundamental rules regarding isolating the unknown to one side of the equation, fractions, decimals, percentages, calculator mastery
* Eliminating Units of Measure confusion: Converting, carrying, canceling English and Metric Units of Measure; common mistakes when manipulating Units of Measures
* Important water & wastewater calculations: volumes, QAVs, Chemical dose and usage, solution strength, sludge age, detention time, chlorine demand, sludge volume Index, surface overflow rates, Total Dynamic head etc
* Lots of in-class operator math practice problems: student practice and instructor feedback
Target Audience
All operator math levels of operators, supervisors and superintendents. The class will begin with very basic concepts and increase the level of complexity throughout the day.
