Description
Pennsylvania contains a diverse geology that varies from igneous to sedimentary rock formations. The quantity and quality of water supplied by these diverse geologic formations (aquifers) can affect the planning for a new well. Public water systems do not always have the luxury of finding a new water supply source in close proximity to an existing reservoir, water pipeline or storage tank, but instead must establish additional plans for constructing long pipelines to that new well. Understanding the processes by which these geologic formations form and their statue in the landscape can help explain the variation is water quality across the commonwealth. Identifying the geology affects water quality can provide a guide to finding superior quality water for public water systems with minimal treatment.
