This workshop is designed as an introduction to the analytical methods and techniques required for accurate laboratory measurement of pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), BOD, and COD. Online analysis of DO and solids will also be discussed. Techniques covered in the course include calibration (where applicable), sample measurement, and method verification. The course objectives will be met by presenting theory, incorporating practical application of analytical techniques, and through hands-on experience with each testing parameter, Students are required to analyze water samples of known and unknown values.

Basic thru Intermediate

*Road to Water Testing - Apresentation containing a general overview of why, when, and how water is tested, includes information on sampling, sample preparation, testing considerations, and method verification. * Presentation covers the theory of pH measurement, how pH electrodes work, pH calibration, verification, and sample measurement, and care of the electrode, hands-on lab covers types of electrodes, troubleshooring, calibration, verification, and measurement * Presentation covers the theory of DO measurement, types of DO electrode systems and how they work, electrode calibration and sample measurement, and electrode maintenance. Hands-on lab covers preparation of the electrode, calibration, and sample measurement. * Presentation covers the theory of COD and BOD measurement, as well as analysis options for COD and BOD in wastewater, Hands-on lab covers proper setup of bottles for BOD analysis and dissolved ozugen measurement.

Members of the target audience include municipal wastewater plant operators, industrial wastewater plant operators, lab analysts and managers, qulaity contorl supervisors, regulatory personnel, and environmental protection staff - although the course mainly covers wastewater applications, anyone who measures or utilizes measurements from pH, conductivity, DO, BOD, of COD measurements may find this class useful.
