Description
This course will teach the operators, lab personnel and consultants how to optimize the wastewater treatment plant processes using the microscope and knowledge of wastewater microbiology. In this class the wastewater professional will learn how to identify the microorganisms that are favorable to the Activated Sludge treatment process and gain an understanding of how to maintain the proper environment for their growth. Participants will also learn to diagnose treatment system problems based on the microbiology of the system and will be introduced to process control methods and causes and cures for problematic filamentous bacteria. The instructor will present simple and practical step-by-step laboratory procedures for tracking, identifying and diagnosing conditions in the wastewater treatment system environment.
The course will be presented as a hands-on learning experience. Participants are encouraged to bring their own microscopes and a sample of mixed liquor. Although encouraged, it is not a requirement for participation. The instructor will provide pipettes, slides and staining materials.
