Description
“Odor Production, Prevention, and Control” reviews the microbial activities and their operational conditions that do promote and do not promote odor production. The microbial activities or respirations that are review include 1) aerobic/oxic, 2) anaerobic/anoxic, 3) anaerobic/sulfate reduction, 4) anaerobic/mixed acid production, and 5) methane production. Monitoring tools (pH, ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, ORP, and gas chromatography to identify the area within the conveyance system and treatment plant as well as the form of respiration are presented. Operational measures to prevent the production of odors are addressed as well as operational measures to control odors once they occur. Preventative and control measures presented include 1) cleaning, 2) sewer design, 3) oxic and anoxic maintenance, 4) bioaugmentation, 5) pH adjustment, 6) disinfection, 7) sulfide precipitation, and 8) biological and chemical scrubbers.
