Description
This workshop is designed to be an introduction to the principles of distribution system monitoring and data handling. Topics to be covered include the importance of monitoring in the water distrubution system, grab sample laboratory analysis and method verification, flow and sampling, online instrumentation and communication, and quality control. The course objectives will be met by presenting theory, incorporating practical applications of analytical techniques, and through hands-on experience and demonstration of testing parameters using laboratory and online instrumentation. Students will be required to analyze standards and samples.

Course Content
*Introduction to Distribution System Monitoring - An introduction to the importance of monitoring in the distribution system and the importance of collecting baseline data for trendline purposes.
* Theory of colorimetric analysis, explanation of how colorimeters and spectrophotometers work, explanation of verification methods.
* Hands-on testing for chlorine and iron, method verification using standard solutions and standard additions methods.
* Basic information of flow monitoring and sampling and how it relates to monitoring in the drinking water distribution system.
* Basic information on online analyzers used for monitoring, including communications options.
* Sampling, trends, basic statistics (average, standard deviation, CV), control charts, precision, what to do if the data in not what is expected.

Members of the target audience include water plant operators and distribution personnel, lab analysts and supervisors, regulatory personnel, and environmental protection staff - this course is applicable to anyone who needs to perform or utilize distribution system data.
