Description
Backflow and cross-connections can cause a serious health risk to communities. Chapter 109.709 states that "At the direction of the Department, the public water supplier shall develop and implement a comprehensive control program for the elimination of existing cross-connection or the effective containment of sources of contamination, and prevention of future cross-connections." Public water system personnel, wastewater plant operators, plumbers, sprinkler fitters and other maintenance personnel should be familiarized with the different types of backflow prevention assemblies and the different styles of check valves and relief valves within them in order to be able to effectively carryout a cross-connection plan. Proper assembly, maintenance and repair on the backflow prevention devices installed within a distribution system is the key to a successful plan.
