Description
Disinfection of drinking water and wastewater is the single most important aspect of water treatment as it has prevented more disease than any other health initiative, including immunizations. Chlorination of both drinking and wastewater has come under increased scrutiny due to the formation of carcinogenic compounds and possible health risks. Drinking water operators will learn how to control and reduce the formation of disinfection byproducts by the use of ozone, UV, and chemical sequestering agents. Wastewater operators will learn how to comply with low residual chlorine effluent limits through better testing and proper dechlorination dosing. The class will break into groups of 3 or 4 to test the total and free residual chlorine on different samples and use that dosage to calculate the chlorine feed rate required for a hypothetical plant. Operators will learn the proper operating procedures for UV systems, chlorine systems, and ozone systems and how to maintain those systems.
