Description
The purpose of the training is to prepare each selected Aqua employee to function effectively as a "Competent Person" and to understand and apply OSHA excavation standards at Aqua excavation sites.

Course Content
• Basic elements of excavation safety • Review of Federal OSHA 1926.650-652 (Subpart P: Excavation) • Requirements Aqua America’s Standard Excavation Safety Practice • Safe practices and additional duties of the Competent Person • Definition of Competent Person including abilities, expertise, and responsibilities • Trench failure accidents • Definitions • General requirements of the OSH act including surface encumbrances, underground installations, access and egress, exposure to traffic, protection from falling objects, warning systems, hazardous atmospheres, hazards from water accumulation, stability of adjacent structures, protection of employees from loose soil, inspections, fall protection end of day activities and bell bottom pier holes. • Soil classification including visual analysis and manual testing • Protection systems including sloping, shoring, shielding: wood/timber, hydraulic shoring systems, upright sheeting, trench shields, tabulated data, use of RPEs, and regulations.
Target Audience
Selected Aqua employees that have demonstrated competency, capability, responsibility and leadership qualities necessary to effectively and immediately correct hazards that may appear on a work site. With proper capability, experience and training, Aqua will grant Competent Person authority to these individuals.
