Description
Provide water and wastewater operators training on OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard (HAZCOM), 29 CRF 1910.1200, which requires that hazardous materials used at the work site are identified, labeled, handled, used, and disposed of properly. Topics include chemical states, employer and employee responsibilities, company goals, and federal agencies that regulate workplace chemicals. The goal of the course is to prevent or minimize employee exposure to hazardous materials and to minimize their accidental release in the work environment. This course covers the 2012 changes to SDS, labeling, and GHS.

Course Content
• Identify the four different components of the Hazard Communication Standard.
• Describe your rights and responsibilities regarding hazardous chemicals and workplace safety.
• Understand labeling requirements and how to read labels for hazards and precautions.
• Recognize basic information available on Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and understand how to read them.
• Identify different types of physical and health hazards.
• List common signs and symptoms of chemical exposure for both acute and chronic effects.
• Understand and apply information about a chemical’s physical properties as they relate to hazards.
• Describe different types of safety measures that can be taken to protect against chemical hazards, including hazard controls and personal protective equipment.

Pennsylvania Intergovernmental Risk Management Association client that are certified Pa. DEP water and wastewater operators.
