Description
This 24 hour program covers the OSHA Excavation Standard and the safety aspects of excavation and trenching. Students are introduced to practical soil mechanics and its relationship to the stability of shored and un-shored slopes and walls of excavations. Various types of shoring (wood timbers and hydraulic) are covered. Testing methods are demonstrated and activities conducted to allow students to use instruments such as penetrometers, torvane shears, and engineering rods.

Course Content
1. Introduction and registration 2. List excavation requirements contained in OSHA CFR 1926 Subpart P 3. Discuss requirements and competencies for a Competent Person as defined in Subpart P 4. Discuss basic concepts of soil mechanics and how environmental factors affect soil stability 5. Demonstrate and perform field soil tests as described in Appendix A of the OSHA standard 6. Classify soils according to the requirements of Appendix A of the OSHA Standard 7. Discuss proper sloping and benching methods according to Subpart B of the OSHA Standard 8. Discuss timber shoring systems as per Appendix C of the OSHA Standard 9. Explain the use of aluminum hydraulic shoring system as per Appendix D of the OSHA Standard when manufacturer’s data cannot be obtained 10.
