Description
Recent Harmful Algae Blooms in Lake Erie near Toledo, OH and on the Ohio River near Cincinnati, OH have drawn attention to the dangers of cyanotoxins and microcystins entering community drinking water systems. The purpose of the course is to educate water system managers and operators on monitoring techniques for these dangerous toxins, identifying levels that may serve as trigger points for action, implementing possible alternative treatment techniques, developing action plans including appropriate public notifications, and instituting steps for recovery.

Course Content
--Overview of HABs with case studies, US EPA HAB Guidance, alternative treatment techniques and resilience measures and recovery steps: powerpoint by Dr. Stanley States --PADEP's perspective on HABs: powerpoint (not available yet) --Monitoring for Cyanotoxins: powerpoint by Dave Deardorff of Abraxis --Tabletop Exercise whereby participants will be given scenario injects involving rising levels of cyanotoxins at their intakes, cyanotoxins entering their treatment plant and cyanotoxins showing up in their distribution system. Participants will role play the scenarios as if it were happening at their water system. Facilitators Stanley States, Craig Kern and Mike Snyder are tasked with keeping the participants engaged. Regulators and outside agencies will be available for consultations with the participants.
Target Audience
This course is appropriate for managers and operators of surface water systems.
