Description
Thermal oxidization of wastewater sludge results in atmospheric emissions and inert ash, which are regulated under the Clean Air Act and the Solid Waste Management Act. Operators must be knowledgeable in the proper operation and maintenance of sewage sludge incinerators and the various air pollution control devices that may be installed to reduce air emissions and to minimize water and solid waste pollution. The fundamentals of combustion also need to be understood to maintain efficient thermal oxidation.
There are two types of sewage sludge incineration systems – Fluidized Bed and Multiple Hearth. This training course focuses on the second type – the Multiple Hearth Furnace, in which several distinct thermal operations at different temperatures occur, including, drying, volatilization, fixed carbon burning, ash cooling and afterburner. The course also provides instruction on operation of continuous emissions monitoring systems, ash and ash handling systems, malfunctions, upsets and emergency operations, and slag formation.
Annual incinerator system operator training is required under the federal Sewage Sludge Incinerator regulations at Subparts LLLL and MMMM of 40 CFR §60 and Subpart LLL of 40 CFR §62.
