Infiltration and inflow cause excess flows into a collection system, ultimately stressing the wastewater treatment process, leading to higher treatment costs, threats to the environment, and the possibility of fines due to the inability to adequately treat the excess flows. The purpose of this course is to review the sources and possible remedies of infiltration and inflow in a collection system. The course will include a discussion of how to determine whether infiltration and inflow is occurring, identification of sources of infiltration and inflow, review of the steps of an infiltration and inflow abatement program, and discussion of possible sewer rehabilitation methods.

The course content includes: - Statement of course objectives - I&I flow calculations - Common sources of I&I - Main components of an I&I abatement program - Compare/contrast inflow vs. infiltration - Sewer system evaluation survey - Sewer system mapping - Sewer system metering - Sewer system televising - Sewer system hydraulic characterization - Sewer system rehabilitation - Videos demonstrating sewer system rehabilitation methods - Sewer system post-rehabilitation flow metering - Case study of I&I rehab program

The target audience is both wastewater system managers and wastewater operators. All individuals will learn the reasons why infiltration and inflow are not favorable, when to be concerned, how the problem should be confronted, and expected outcomes.
