Description
Chemistry is a wide-ranging subject that can take many years of study. This curriculum covers basic concepts in chemistry such as how to use the periodic table, the chemistry of water, and how to calculate dosage. These are basic skills that can assist students in more advanced understandings of chemical processes within the Drinking Water and Wastewater fields.
Drinking Water and Wastewater operators utilize a wide variety of chemistry skills in the field and in the lab. The most recent ABC Needs to Know documents that operators should possess an understanding of water chemistry, dosage calculations and familiarity with the periodic table. This class addresses those needs and helps small system operators that have had some basic chemistry instruction in high school or college.
Course Level
Basic thru Intermediate
Course Content
As a result of this training, participants will be able to:
a) Use the periodic table
b) Understand the basic chemical properties of water
c) be able to calculate concentrations in solution
The modules cover:
1) Why Chemistry is important for operators
2) How to use the periodic table including an understanding of protons, electrons and neutrons, determining mass and predicting charge on anions and cations.
3) Chemistry of water including hydrogen bonding, impact of temperature, solubility and pH
4) Preparing solutions and identifying and understanding concentration, dilutions and the Dosing equation.
Target Audience
The target audience is small system water operators that have had some basic chemistry instruction in high school or college. The training module is designed to fit in a half-day session and can be combined with other modules at the discretion of the trainer.
