Description
This course provides the operator of the treatment process with reliable, often rapid tests for early detection and troubleshooting of undesired changes in the steady state and acceptable operational condition. Biological, chemical, and physical tests are presented that can be used individually or in combination for process control. Most tests that are reviewed are inexpensive, simplistic, reliable, and rapid. Changes from an acceptable test value or range of test values are explained as well as corrective operational measures. Biological tests presented include: total BOD and specific forms of BOD; polysaccharide storage during stress conditions; detection of unique forms of biological growth, presence of PHB, sulfur, and volutin granules, protozoan count and profile; and toxicity. Chemical tests presented include: alkalinity and pH; COD; BOD:COD; target value nutrients; and pH growth ranges and optimal growth ranges; and physical tests include: conductivity and total dissolved solids (TDS); oxidation-reduction potential (ORP); solids settleability and rise times; surface tension and viscosity; and temperature growth ranges and optimal growth ranges.
