Description
Extreme weather events and other disasters can disrupt water services and impact public health and healthcare delivery. There can be devastating effects without proper coordination and communication between the sectors. What can be done to better prepare for such events? The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection are co-sponsoring a one-day workshop designed to bring together water utility staff, public health, and healthcare personnel to discuss concerns and priorities during a disaster.
Course Level
Basic thru Advanced
Course Content
The course consists of morning presentations that describe three incidents in which a drinking water distribution system incident caused issues for hospitals and healthcare facilities. Each presentation will be co-presented by a water utility/agency representative along with a healthcare sector representative that was involved in the incident. Presenters will focus on response and lessons learned. The afternoon tabletop exercise will allow all participants in a small group setting to discuss emergency response to a fictional scenario.
Target Audience
The target audience are Pennsylvania drinking water operators, as well as representatives from the public health, healthcare, state agency and emergency management sector. Pennsylvania drinking water operators will share their challenges during an emergency and learn about challenges the other sectors face.
