Description
Due to climate change and other factors, Pennsylvania drinking water systems are seeing a rise in algal blooms in source waters. It is imperative that drinking water operators and managers can determine which cyanobacteria are harmful, utilize the EPA Cyanotoxins checklist, evaluate the latest testing methods and equipment available, and apply the most effective treatment techniques if needed.

Course Content
--Provide participants an overview of cyanotoxins (basic information) so they can classify which cyanobacteria pose a threat to their raw water supplies.
--Provide participants information on how to control HABs in raw water supplies so they can analyze which technique will work best for their source water.
--Explain the EPA guidance and advisories for cyanotoxins
--Compare Ohio's HABs incidents to those arising in Pennsylvania
--Illustrate how EPA's support tools for managing cyanotoxins can be helpful for PA water systems
--Show examples of how PA water systems have dealt with algal blooms in their raw water supplies
--Summarize some conventional treatment techniques for HABs
Target Audience
This course is designed for operators, distribution crews, engineers and management, all of which may have a role in responding to a Harmful Algal Bloom.
