Description
The purpose of this course is to prepare participants for the PA DEP Wastewater Treatment Exam. Successful completion of this course will help the participant become a certified wastewater treatment operator and also serves as a refresher course for practitioners seeking continuing education credits.

Course Content
Introduction to Wastewater
a. List the roles of the Treatment Plant Operator and describe the responsibilities of each.
b. Describe the typical composition of raw wastewater.
c. Explain the effects of wastewater discharges on the receiving stream.
Fundamental of Wastewater Treatment
a. Explain the general purpose of the Preliminary Treatment Process.
b. Explain the purpose of Screening (racks, screens, & comminutors), Grit Removal (channels & separators) and Pre-aeration.
c. Indicate the differences between manually and mechanically cleaned racks and screens.
General Chemistry
a. List the parts of an atom.
b. Given the number of protons in an element, indicate its atomic number.
c. Given the atomic number of an element, indicate the number of protons in the element.
General Math
a. Review basic math rules.
b. Perform basic calculations and conversions containing fractions and decimals.
c. State the basic rules for performing mathematical computations.
Target Audience
This course is designed for people who desire a career as a wastewater treatment operator or plant superintendent as well as for water authority personal and board members. This course can also serve as a refresher course for practitioners seeking continuing education credits.
