Description
The purpose of this course is to prepare participants for the PA DEP Wastewater Treatment Exam. Successful completion of this course will help the participant become a certified wastewater treatment operator and also serves as a refresher course for practitioners seeking continuing education credits.

Course Content
General Safety a. Define basic safety terms. b. Identify six sources of supplemental safety information. c. For each of the eleven examples of chemicals used at treatment plants: 1) Describe the chemical. 2) Explain its properties. 3) Explain the health hazards and symptoms associated with the chemical. 4) Identify the exposure limits for the chemical. 5) Explain the hazard control requirements for the chemical. Ethics and Regulations a. Provide an overview of history of federal and state law. b. Discuss, with emphasis, the legal requirements for wastewater system operators. c. Identify the role of PADEP, EPA. Applied Biology a. Identify activated sludge indicator (good bugs/bad bugs) organisms. b. Explain the importance of microbiology in wastewater treatment and list some beneficial and harmful microorganisms. c. Demonstrate how to correctly use a microscope.
Target Audience
This course is designed for people who desire a career as a wastewater treatment operator or plant superintendent as well as for water authority personal an board members. This course can also serve as a refresher course for practitioners seeking continuing education credits.
