Description
The purpose of this course is to prepare participants for the PA DEP Wastewater Treatment Exam. Successful completion of this course will help the participant become a certified wastewater treatment operator and also serves as a refresher course for practitioners seeking continuing education credits.

Ponds and Lagoons a. Describe why ponds are used in wastewater treatment. b. Identify three (3) types of ponds. c. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using ponds for treatment. d. Name two levels of treatment that ponds can achieve. e. Discuss why ponds have long detention times and large volumes. Trickling Filter Process a. Name the three components of a trickling filter. b. Name the two general types of trickling filters based on method of distribution. c. Describe the process and operation of a trickling filter. d. Identify the three classifications of trickling filters based on hydraulic and organic loading rates. e. Calculate hydraulic loading rates for trickling filters. f. Calculate organic loading rates for trickling filters. Rotating Biological Contact a. Describe the principles of an attached growth biological treatment system and describe how a Rotating Biological Contactor operates. b. Identify the five major components of an RBC and explain their function
