Description
The purpose of this course is to prepare participants for the PA DEP Wastewater Treatment Exam. Successful completion of this course will help the participant become a certified wastewater treatment operator and also serves as a refresher course for practitioners seeking continuing education credits.

Activated Sludge Part I
a. Describe the activated sludge process and its control variables.
b. List three types of activated sludge treatment plants.
c. Explain the purpose and methods of aeration.
d. Describe how mechanical aeration works.
e. Describe the three types of diffusers.
f. Describe plant safety procedures around an aeration tank.
g. Explain the purpose of plant and equipment review prior to plant start-up.
h. List equipment and structures that need to be checked.
i. Explain the plant start-up procedure.
Activated Sludge Part II
a. List the key monitoring points within the activated sludge process and explain what to look for at those points.
b. List five key process control parameters and for each parameter, explain what it is, why it is used and how it is calculated.
c. List the daily process control tasks that need to be accomplished and explain how to do them.
