Description
The purpose of this course is to prepare participants for the PA DEP Wastewater Treatment Exam. Successful completion of this course will help the participant become a certified wastewater treatment operator and also serves as a refresher course for practitioners seeking continuing education credits.

Course Content
Activated Sludge III
a. Review of conventional activated sludge.
b. Reasons for and the description of modifications.
c. SBR configuration, processes and process control guidelines.
d. Pure oxygen activated sludge systems.
e. Assess safety of the pure oxygen systems.
Activated Sludge IV
a. Explain properties of nitrogen and the necessity of its removal from wastewater.
b. Nitrogen removal mechanisms and how they work.
c. Process control of biological nitrification and denitrification.
d. Evaluation of the A2O and Bardenpho processes and process control.
e. Appropriate operational responses to a shock load.
f. Record keeping.

This course is designed for people who desire a career as a wastewater treatment operator or plant superintendent as well as for water authority personal and board members. This course can also serve as a refresher course for practitioners seeking continuing education credits.
