Description
This course was developed by the Utility Workers Union of America, through Power for America with grant money received from the Susan B. Harwood Fund, which is provided by the United States Department of Labor. The
Systems of Safety course uses the Small Group Activity Method (SGAM) in each activity. The activities are designed to learn by doing, rather than learn by listening. The basic structure for each activity has 3 elements: small group tasks, report-back, and the summary. In each element, the facilitator is there to guide the group discussion and the group’s learning rather than being responsible for delivering the learning content. The facilitators are members of the Utility Workers of America, employed by American Water. One addition to the activities is the use of American Water’s Life Saving Rules and the Health & Safety Charter.
