Description
The EFCN provides free training to small water utilities in all U.S. states and territories as part of a cooperative agreement with the US EPA. This free, 1.5 hour online training is intended to serve water and waste water utility improve and maintain their system using components of Asset Management, specifically asset inventory development and mapping techniques. Asset management provides utility managers and decision-makers with critical information on capital assets and timing of investments. Some key steps for asset management are making an inventory of critical assets, evaluating their condition and performance, and developing plans to maintain, repair, and replace assets and to fund these activities.
These skills are critical for ensuring that water utility personnel, managers, board members, and other decision-makers are able to maximize their operations and maintenance funds, to better serve their customers and ensure long-term public health and safety standards are met.

Course Content
Asset Management is a process that allows a water or wastewater system to better manage its assets and improve the workday for its employees. It helps improve efficiency and reduce unplanned, reactionary activities in favor of more planned, proactive work.
As we move beyond the basics of asset management, we will briefly revisit the overall thought-process of asset management during the first part of this training, before focusing on more advanced concepts related to asset inventory and mapping. This virtual training module will focus on developing an asset inventory with analysis in mind. We will discuss:
o the types of asset data that can and should be collected;
o the readily available data collection apps;
o creating a basic data collection form within an application;
o avoiding common data collection mistakes; and
o building data collection into daily system activity.
We will also cover GIS basics and more advanced analysis techniques. We will:

Target Audience
This workshop if appropriate for water and wastewater utility staff that are faced with making managerial or financial decisions or who are learning managerial skills to advance their careers at utilities serving fewer than 10,000 people . This workshop is also appropriate for for utility and town decision makers involved with the financial management of the water systems, including: utility directors, finance directors, town managers, elected officials, board members, clerks, and others who oversee the financial planning and management of water systems.
