This course introduces water utility professionals to the basics of GIS mapping of water utility infrastructure and the equipment, tools, and software needed. This is essential for the proper management of water utility infrastructure assets.

Course Content
In this class we will teach you how GIS works and what we can do with GIS. We will cover: The history of maps, a brief summery of how maps and map technology have developed over time, introducing basic map concepts, The definition of GIS and the components that are necessary for GIS to function, GIS data, which GIS data is most useful, and how we collect GIS data and the different types of GIS data, Coordinate systems, delving into how coordinate systems work with common examples, and Data collection tools and techniques, discussing what you can expect when GIS mapping your own system and GIS software options. Through this course you will be able to: Identify the key terms and elements of maps and GIS, Understand the basic processes of GPS and GIS, and Perform GPS/GIS data collection techniques for water, wastewater and stormwater systems.
