Description
The advanced leakage management course can build from the water auditing and leakage management assistance training but is not considered a prerequisite to this course. Across the United States, non-revenue water (NRW), particularly distribution system leakage, is a widespread challenge to which no water utility is immune. There is growing recognition of the role that effective water loss control can play in helping utilities meet viability goals. This training will demonstrate the AWWA methodology as an effective means of obtaining accurate loss volumes, setting cost-effective leakage management strategies, and implementing controls to reduce leakage and contain it to acceptable levels. The method allows water utilities to quantify their operations and losses by:
1.Volume – how much water is being lost
2.Value – how much is it costing the system each year
3.Validity of data – based on the practices and policies within a water system, how reliable is the data used to quantify NRW.
Attendees will learn how to compile information for an annual water audit, collect pertinent information on repairs, identify appropriate leakage control activities, set leakage and pressure management goals, and how to conduct active leakage control.

Course Content
As a result of completing this course, students will be able to:
- Explain how leakage occurs in water distribution systems and the problems leakage causes
- Describe how leakage imparts direct and indirect costs on water utility operations
- Define proactive leakage management and its key activities
- Identify the ways to detect leaks and pinpoint them
- Assess a water utility’s pressure levels and potential for improved pressure management
- Determine the best actions to cost-effectively monitor and control water utility leakage
Target Audience
The target audience for this advanced training will include representatives of public drinking water systems throughout Pennsylvania. The representatives may be operators, consultants, suppliers, regulatory agencies, technical assistance providers, board members, and managers.
