Description
This course is intended to provide an introduction to trenching and excavation practices and procedures including, but not limited to, procedures for safe location and support of underground installations, providing for protection of workers in trenches and procedures for inspection of active excavation sites and information necessary for the supervision of workers performing these functions.

• "The Problem" - Trenching and Excavation through the past century. o OSHA enforcement • OSHA’s Basic Message on Excavation and Trenching Safety o Prepare, Protect and Inspect • Underground utilities o Utility location (811/”Miss Utility”, etc.) o Manual location of underground utilities (probing, hand dig, "potholing, daylighting, hydroexcavation) o Exclusion zones o Support of exposed utilities - surface encumberances • Managing Excavations and Trenches o Inspections o Hazardous atmospheres o Hazards associated with water o Access and egress (walking and working surfaces) o Fall protection requirements • Soil mechanics and classification o Soil types (Type A, Type B, Type C and Stable Rock o Methods of Soil Testing • Protective systems o Shoring o Sloping o Shielding • Knowledge Assessment
Target Audience
This course is intended for technicians, engineers and supervisors, both drinking water and wastewater, whose duties may require them to perform work in or adjacent to trenches or excavation sites, or who may be required to supervise the activities of workers, contractors and subcontractors performing such duties on sites under their control or direction.
