Description
This class will be a part of the Related Technical Instruction curricula for the PATC (Pennsylvania Apprenticeship & Training Council) registered water operator apprenticeship program. It will also comprise a portion of the updated curricula for CPI's 1023 hour, ACCSC (Accrediting Commission of Career Schools & Colleges) accredited Water & Wastewater Utility Operator/ Technician diploma program. Finally, the course will be available to individuals and utility employee groups for relevant training and DEP-approved contact hours. The purpose of the proposed course is to present and discuss the "foundational" components of safe drinking water of which every effective water facility operator must be grounded. These components include: the hydrologic cycle; water-born disease history, causes, and consequences; water treatment history; basic and water-treatment-process-specific chemistry; Best Available Technology contaminant removal methodologies; regulatory history and importance, and the importance of proactively maintaining water plants and distribution facilities.

Course Content
Explain the components and significance of the Hydrologic Cycle. Define and discuss watersheds in terms of topography, water tables, water quantity, and water quality. Define & identify types of surface water and ground water supply sources. Identify different types of aquifers in terms of their geologic and geographic characteristics. Differentiate between ground water under the Direct versus the Indirect influence of surface water. Describe drinking water health and aesthetic issues and differentiate between the two categories. Explain the difference between potable and non-potable water and the importance of well designed, constructed, operated, maintained, and regulated water treatment and distribution processes. Identify and discuss the historical occurrence and significance of specific water borne diseases. Identify Best Available Technology for specific contaminant removal. The target audience for this class will include: * water apprentice operators enrolled in the PATC registered water operator apprenticeship program. CPI is the sponsor and Related Technical Instruction provider for this PATC registered apprenticeship program. * adult students enrolled in CPI's 1023 hour, ACCSC accredited Water & Wastewater Utility Operator/ Technician diploma program. * individuals and utility employee groups interested in attaining quality, DEP-approved training
