Description
Layout is a shop term which describes the process of drawing the part details shown on a shop print onto the surface of a workpiece. A layout may consist of a simple line to show where a part should be cut off or a complex series of lines, arcs, and circles to reproduce a detailed part. The shop print and the operations needed to make a part are the only guides a machinist has when constructing a layout. Many different types of tools and instruments are required to measure and mark layouts. This lesson will show you how each of these tools is used, and the applications where each is best suited. In addition, the basic principles, methods, and techniques of layout will also be discussed to completely acquaint you with this very important machine shop process. The first step in mastering layout is to know the basic types and applications of layout tools.
