Description
The course provides an in-depth review of the bacteria, operational conditions and biological principles that influence nitrification, denitrification and biological phosphorus removal. The course also provides biological, chemical and physical measures for monitoring and regulating BNR for permit compliance, process control and cost-effective operation. Required, desired and accidental occurences of nitrification and denitrification are presented. Troubleshooting and correctiveness measures for accidental nitrification and denitrification also are presented.
Course Level
Basic thru Advanced
Course Content
* Biological principles of nitrification, denitrification and biological phosphorus removal and their application for permit compliance, process control and cost-effective operation
* Monitoring and regulating acceptable forms of BNR
* Determining the forms of nitrification, their causes, including the chlorine sponge and its correction
* Nitrogenous wastes and their impact upon the treatment process
* Benefits of denitrification
* Oxic, anoxic and anaerobic respiration
Target Audience
Operators who must comply with BNR requirements or soon will be required to comply; operators who use or are considering using nitrification / denitrification to improve plant performance; operators who experience operational problems with undesired nitrification / denitrification.
